The southern Amazon basin engulfs the northern Bolivian department of Beni. Deep in the Beni rainforest, numerous rivers and streams crisscross to create a seemingly endless waterway - all part of the Rio Cano/San Simon river system. Pristine lagoons also dot the low-country, holding huge populations of freshwater game fish. In fact, this specific area is home to the highest concentration of peacock bass found anywhere on Earth! Typically these peacock bass range from 3 to 11lbs, and it is not uncommon to land up to 50 peacocks per fishing day! The fierce-fighting, saber-toothed payara can also be found in great numbers. Likened to a "tarpon on steroids" these payara generally rage from 5 to 25lbs, but often can be found in the 30 to 50lb range! In total, there are more than a dozen species of fish caught in the area, including piranhas and MASSIVE tiger catfish. While the amazing fishing is the main attraction, the Bolivian Amazon also offers an entirely unique wildlife experience. Jaguars, giant caiman, capybara and exotic birds all call this part of the Amazon home. Expect to see flora and fauna not found anywhere else in the world.
