Located at The Waterfront Marina, just a short walk north along the seashore from downtown Nanaimo, Vancouver Island Catamaran Sailing is surrounded in the distance by snowcapped mountains, countless islands, beautiful seashores, stunning forests, parks and hiking trails. This seaside community is rich in pioneer history, culture, arts, fine restaurants, live theatre and many outdoor activities. A must see is nearby Newcastle Island - a Provincial Marine Park - (know as "Saysutshun" by the Snuneymuxw people). Its 22 km of hiking trails, secluded individual and group camping facilities, and beaches provide a wondrous escape from urban life - except for the notorious albino racoons! This enchanting island has a vibrant First Nations culture and history as well as a long history of coal mining, a sandstone quarry and herring salteries. Ashes to the Ocean This is a popular and affordable way to say farewell, honor and disburse your loved ones ashes, in the beautiful waters surrounding Nanaimo from the peace and comfort of the Catamaran Shadowfax. The service can either be attended with up to 12 people or unattended. Suggested length of service is 1.5 hours. It can be done in either daylight or evening hours. All faiths welcome. Disbursement areas are numerous and we can be quite flexible as per location. All locations are close to the main Nanaimo shore or adjacent islands. We find a calm area to ensure a comfortable service and usually try to turn off the motor, put it on the quiet electric mode or put up some sail. The only sound is nature, wind and waves. Often an area can be chosen where the boat ceremony can be viewed from shore. This is a place where more family or friends - who do not fit on the boat - can gather and can see the actual boat ceremony from a distance and a place where family or friends can go in the future, on their own, and remember their loved ones. Areas chosen previously have been Neck Point or Pipers Lagoon beaches. For evening or night services, the moon, city and harbor lights and reflections add to the beauty of the ceremony. Once on station you can perform a ceremony - of your own choice. Music can be played or honor can be shown in silence. We do have Bluetooth capabilities if you have your own music; if not we can play appropriate background music. Distributing bags of loose flower petals, along with the ashes, is a beautiful addition to the ceremony and highly recommended. After the disbursement we try to cruise a short time, near the disbursement area, watching the ashes and flower petals gently spread throughout the area, and then slowly motor back to the marina. We try to truly make it a a time. Participants usually bring along snacks or refreshments to toast or enjoy. If you wish us to take care of other details such as providing snacks or refreshments we can assist you in any capacity as required or you can bring your own. In the following section are scripts that have been used by others or myself for these types of occasions. They are not faith or religion specific but are only shared to give you some examples that others have used. I welcome suggestions or yours to share here. What To Expect Onboard: Shadowfax is a multi-hulled, wing-masted cruising catamaran sailboat. It was made for crusing safely along the Pacific Coast in an eco-friendly way. She has a shallow draft, is stable, comfortable and fast. She is equipped with approved modern communication, safety and navigation equipment. For additional safety and to get ashore, an accompanying inflatable Zodiac is always towed behind Shadowfax. Because of her large deck area - 10 meters long and 5.5 meters wide - she has ample space to sit, stand, lounge or sail. Just lying in the sun on the two hull net trampolines, watching the water pass beneath, is a delightful way to engage your senses. As of 2021 we have installed an electric motor to continue to be eco friendly. If you have any questions, we can respond via the GetMyBoat messaging platform before you pay. Just click “Request Reservation” and send us a query for a personalized offer.
