Kayaking In El Calafate

Kayaking along La Leona River We start the pick-up by hotels at 7.30 am to reach the starting area at 9.30am. A talk about the equipment used and safety standards is done. Participants are given the technical equipment (wetsuit, neoprene boots, cockpit covers, semi-dry jacket, life jacket, helmet and mittens for cold ) and a waterproof bag to store their belongings and lunch boxes . Once we are dressed, we regulate the kayaks (passenger go on double kayaks and guides on simple ones) and show the forward paddle maneuvers, turns and brakes. The safety and rescue maneuvers are practiced. A guide helps the participants to get into the kayak and the other guide receives the group in the river. Once the whole group is in the water we start paddling. The guides are permanently attending participants and checking safety. They will explain about geology, flora, fauna and history of the area. The first kayak ride lasts approximately 1 hour. In Cerro Los Hornos (La Meseta estancia) we stop for lunch and we make a short hike through the river shore till we get to a viewpoint where you can see bones and petrified trunks. Time for lunch and walk is 1hour and 45minutes. After some time off we go up over the kayaks for the last part of the itinerary observing the geological formations and steppe vegetation. We finally get to El Turbio stream where the van is waiting to take us back to Calafate. Duration of the second kayak ride is 1 hour and 20 minutes. Time of arrival at Arroyo Turbio 3:00pm.
